Blog I Love: Kitchen Confidante

I am such a fan of KITCHEN CONFIDANTE. I chanced upon Liren's blog while looking for Filipino recipes while craving for food back home one sunny Saturday afteroon in 2013. Ever since then, I have been mesmerized with the way she combines different ingredients and creates new flavors. Perhaps we share this heavy food-centric Philippine culture, and so I celebrate her bold and exciting concoctions. Here are my top 5 dishes from her FILIPINO ARCHIVES:

Chocolate and rice with milk, and sometimes with a side order of tuyo (dried and salted herring). The very definition of comfort food. I miss cold (in the tropical version of cold) December evenings with my family.

There is no other broth quite as sour and salty and comforting as Sinigang. Whether with pork, prawns, salmon, or a protein mix of species, this wins.

Philippine afternoon snack at its best! Often considered a street food, this is one of my faves because I love bananas! My sister and I used to grab a bunch of turons and pork barbecue from a vendor selling them in front of our school gate in Manila at dismissal time, so we could munch on it to calm us down from Manila driving and traffic.

I used to think my mom was weird for drinking this at night before going to sleep. Now I know why. Avocados are one of the best things you can gift your body with, and my mom's graceful aging, or the lack thereof is proof this is the fountain of youth. Love.

Whether it was a rainy season typhoon signal whatever class cancellation day, or an awful tummy ache, or an afternoon snack paired with bibingka at Via Mare, Arroz Caldo is one of those truly pinoy authentic dishes I cannot live without. The garlic and the chicken and that comforting and flavorful rice, OH GOD, I'm salivating.
